Blackwire 5200 Series Product Review

The latest headsets to hit our desks from Plantronics is the Blackwire 5200 Series. These are defined by the innovative connectivity involved. All the 5200 series headsets come with 3.5mm plugs - the standard for audiophiles since the days of the Sony Walkman. This gives the 5200 range the ability to connect to most generic devices such as smartphones, tablets and music players. In addition to this the models come with a line cord which terminates in either a generic USB or a smaller USB C plug - thus allowing connection to a multitude of devices.
The Blackwire 5200 series comprises the Blackwire 5210 ( monaural ) and Blackwire 5220 ( binaural ) versions, each of which are supplied with either USB A ( the generic USB plug ) or USB C ( the smaller USB plug more often associated with charging modern mobile phones.
The 3.5mm jack connects to the bottom cord along with an ergonomically designed inline control section which allows easy access to the following controls
- Volume Up
- Volume Down
- Make Call
- End Call
Of course, it is in terms of performance that a business headset should be judged and it is pleasing to note that Plantronics have not spared any attention to detail with the Blackwire 5200 series.
Both the Blackwire 5210 and 5220 models have been designed with the utmost comfort in mind with beautifully lush leatherette ear cushions. The binaural 5520 models have a dual headband sling design for maximum comfort. The headsets are surprisingly lightweight considering their build and can be worn all day without discomfort.
As one would expect from any headset from the Plantronics stable the Blackwire 5200 series deliver astounding audio ( their own words ) with the a flexible boom which incorporates a noise cancelling microphone. The conforming ear cushions also provide passive noise cancellation. With the binaural 5220 models you will be able to fully concentrate on your work whilst the 5210 models will allow one to continue with interoffice dialogue. Built in SoundGuard® DIGITAL protects users from sudden sound spikes.
Whilst come may consider Plantronics to be more function than form, with the new Blackwire 5200 series Plantronics are making a massive statement of intent to throw off that moniker with what is a visually stunning headset, finished to the highest of quality and showing flourishes of design hitherto not associated with the brand.
The Plantronics Blackwire 5200 is compatible with all major Unified Communications Systems such as Avaya, Cisco, Microsoft and has been certified for Skype For Business Use. It is perfectly suited for almost any business environment.
