Anyone who has been working from home and experienced a quiet place to work may have found the return to an open office a bit of a shock. Sitting cosily at home chatting away in complete silence has been, for many, a luxury. Being back in the office brings a lot more background noise which can make communication more difficult. Noise can distract you and also make it more difficult for the person to whom you are speaking to hear you clearly. Research has indicated that poor audio in business costs money. Hence many headsets for the workplace incorporate a range of technologies to increase call quality and minimise audio interference.
TYPES OF NOISE CANCELLATION
Passive Noise Cancellation – this is merely a physical barrier to noise – usually in the form of larger over the ear cups.
Active Noise Cancellation – uses microphones to detect background sounds and to negate them, thus smoothing out the sound waves of non conversational audio.
Adaptive Active Noise Cancellation – more sophisticated than the Active mode, this will analyse the surroundings’ sound profile and ‘adapt’ the cancellation’s properties accordingly. Some headsets allow one to adjust the level of noise cancellation so that the wearer can hear background sounds.
